5 Steps to finding a great web designer

By Ariel A.

Everyone wants a great website that will take their business to the next level, but knowing where to find a great web designer is the key. In today’s world there are too many people who will promise you the world in order to take your money and run. Below are a few steps you can take to protect yourself and your business.

Step 1: DO Your Research, DO Your Research, DO Your Research:

When you go on the web there are many different web design companies seeking your business. One very important thing to always remember is to see if and where they can be found online. Do a general search on Google, Yahoo, & Bing to see if their business can be found online. This shows you that these companies have gone the extra mile and have worked on their SEO (search engine optimization) which is what allows their company to be found online. This is good for you because it shows you that they can do the same for you when and if you request that service.

Step 2: Read the fine Print:

Some web companies like to charge additional fees on top of their quotes at the end and surprise you when you least expect it. That’s why you should always look at the fine print or in layman’s terms their terms of service or the terms and conditions page of every company. Before contacting your perspective company go through the terms and write down anything that you don’t understand. Have a few questions about their services written down as well (almost like having a script ready before you call) so that you don’t forget a question you wish you could have asked the first time.

Step 3: Ask about Intellectual Property

Intellectual Property is defined as, a work or invention that is the result of creativity, such as a manuscript or a design, to which one has rights and for which one may apply for a patent, copyright, trademark, etc. The reason that I’m telling you to ask about this is because every company that designs anything for you, whether a flyer, business card, website, etc.…. holds the right to said design and can if they so choose charge you an additional fee or sell the rights of the design to you, so that it cannot be reproduced. If a web or graphic design company holds the rights to a design they can by law use it as many times as they want with as many people as they see fit.

Step 4: Make sure the Registered Domain Holder:

When you register your domain name (something.com) you are automatically asked for the information of the owner. Many times if you allow a web design company to do this for you they will secretly make themselves the owner of the domain name causing you many headaches, If and when you decide to stop using them. Always ask to made the Registered Domain Owner of the domain and if so needed ask for proof that it has been done this way. For example, always ask for the username & password of whatever domain or hosting company that your web designer is using.

Step 5: Ask for a Written Proposal:

Before you finish any conversation with a perspective web design company don’t be afraid to have them write out a proposal of everything that they will do for you. This ensures that everyone understands what is going to be done as well as any additional fees that may be incurred if and when you add something additional that hasn’t been spoken about either in person or over the phone.
